Except for staff, who were bustling around in anticipation of the busloads of school kids in the parking lot, Huntington Park was quiet and I took the opportunity to explore. Once again, I was fortunate to get a media pass for this game, which meant I could get into the park early. Minor league baseball in the city dates back to 1902, and as someone who’s interested in the history of the game, it was cool to see the Clippers giving a nod to those who came before them: One particularly neat thing I noticed was a statue and a series of plaques honoring past Columbus teams. I took my usual giant lap of the park and took in the sights. See this view from the sidewalk? It’s cool to be able to see through to the field: Although it opened in 2009, it has a real retro feel. The outside of Huntington Park is eye catching. Sometimes, I’ll have read so much about a given park that it seems completely familiar during my visit, but other times, it’s a whole new experience. This isn’t a park I knew a lot about before my visit. I made the couple-hour drive to Columbus and found parking a couple blocks from Huntington Park. game, which teams occasionally do in May and June to cater to school trips. The Columbus Clippers were playing a 10:35 a.m. ![]() After watching an Akron Aeros game the night before and staying close to Akron, I was up by 6 a.m. From a beautiful ballpark to delicious food to a phenomenal hotel, this day had a little of everything. Listen once and you'll know the refrain by heart.You know those days that are long but full of general awesomeness? Well, May 21 was one of those days. Before each game when the PA announcer introduces Blue Jackets anthem singer Leo Welsh, fans respond with a loud, affectionate, 'LEO!' When Stinger starts beating his share drum it's a call for a 'CBJ' or 'Let's Go Jackets' chant, and after the cannon sounds for a goal be prepared to celebrate with Locksley's "The Whip", a goal song from a local band with a catchy refrain. The cannon, and the Blue Jackets' name, are tied to the city & state's contributions to the Union Army during the Civil War. Prior to every game and after each Blue Jackets goal is scored, the team fires an 1857 Napoleon replica cannon that can be heard around the arena. See it up close in Section 111. When joining 'The 5th Line' for a game, there's some things you should know. IMPORTANT! Nationwide Arena is a cashless experience. This beer was made for the fans, named by the fans, and is available throughout the arena. The official beer of the Columbus Blue Jackets is BrewDog's Cannon Blast, an easy-drinking pale ale as smooth as a fresh sheet of ice. Find them using the beer finder or concession locater. ![]() There are tons of great spots for food & drink throughout the arena. There’s no reason to go hungry (or thirsty) at the game. Sensory packs are available to be picked up at guest services at any time throughout the night if needed. All children over the age of 2 are expected to have a ticket. IMPORTANT! Nationwide Arena has a "no bag" policy, which prohibits any bags larger than 8”x5”x1”, with the exception of diaper and medical bags. If you don't have a smart phone, take your confirmation email to the box office for assistance. All tickets are mobile, so if you have concerns about connectivity, add tickets to your Apple Wallet or Google Pay in advance. ![]() ![]() Doors open one hour prior to the start of the game. ![]()
